Children Cope, a non-profit organization, has been presenting the seminar, Children Cope
With Divorce (or Transparenting) since 1993. The four-hour seminar is currently part of
the local rule in Harris and Ft. Bend Counties. Parties filing for divorce in these counties,
who are parents of children under the age of eighteen, are required to take a parenting
seminar before their divorce is finalized. The local rule is upheld by the District Court
Judges and their Associate Judges.
The effects of divorce on children can be negative and lasting. Children need to master
certain tasks at each stage of their development - and must additionally deal with the
divorce. Children Cope With Divorce educates parents and family members to help
their children adjust and manage the additional tasks. The seminar helps parents shift
their focus from their own personal stress of divorce to the needs of their children.
